In art, as in science, it is not always possible to anticipate the
result of an experiment.
Here, the challenge was to assemble tomographic images of a major
molecular complex to create a 3-D image.
A 20A slice through the molecular structure of the 70-S ribosome was
made every 60 degrees; the three slices were cut with a plasma cutter,
assembled on a 60-deg. template, and welded to a central 1" pipe. A
base was carved from a 3" cypress plank to which the pipe+sculpture was
affixed.
This sculpture was a collabortive project with Joe Torres, Taos High
School, and Edgar Meyer, molecular modellor and sculptor.
Initial support by the National Science Foundation, Division of
Biological Infrastructure, through UNM-Taos.
